MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to promote excellence in wrestling by adding positive adult leadership in the lives of wrestlers in the community of Benicia, by dedicating a commitment to wrestling through a fun and challenging experience at both practice and competition, by emphasizing sportsmanship, by building wrestling skills, by respecting others, by engaging in physical fitness, by setting reachable goals, by fostering a "can do" attitude and strong work ethic, and by supporting each other. We strive to not only build great wrestlers but also productive members of our community.
HISTORY
The Benicia Middle School and Club program began during the 2009-2010 school year after a five-year stint of inactivity. Coaches Japheth Aquino and Dominic Boutain started the program up again by becoming Co-Head Coaches at Benicia Middle School. In a short time, the coaches produced quality wrestlers.
They wanted to expose young wrestlers to as many matches and tournaments possible to help develop their skills. Each time the wrestlers hit the mats, first and foremost was their focus on improving technique. With this focus, the wins come naturally as the season progresses and wrestlers improve. In its first year, the Benicia Middle School team’s 7th and 8th graders took first place in the Mt. Diablo Middle School Wrestling League. In the 2010-2011 season, the 6th, 7th and 8th grade wrestlers swept the league, all taking first place. Coach Aquino and Coach Boutain’s effective coaching and strong desire to pass on their knowledge combined with excellent volunteer staff and family support, has managed to do what most programs take years to accomplish. Later during the 2010-2011 season, the coaches took more then 15 wrestlers to the California State Middle School Championships in Fresno and returned with three State Champions, one silver medal finisher, and two bronze medal finishers.

RESULTS OFF THE MAT
The coaching staff has a long tradition of excellence in the sport of wrestling. They teach children, teens, and young adults to push themselves and manifest the best in all aspects of their lives. They have had a priceless affect on some of the wrestlers in and outside the wrestling room. With the help and dedication of the coaching staff, those who formerly struggled with their grades, physical fitness, and confidence have overcome those obstacles. Grades are a very important aspect of an athlete. All athletes must maintain grades high enough to continue participating in the sport. Coach Aquino and Boutain emphasize the importance of grades always. Coach Aquino allows any wrestler (even if not enrolled in his class) to attend after school Help Club.

BENICIA PANTHERS WRESTLING CLUB
The Benicia Wrestling Club began in the Spring of 2010. The primary purpose for the club program is to continue the development of both the High School and the Middle School programs as well as be an opportunity to introduce younger athletes to the sport of wrestling. The Club program focuses primarily on Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles with a little Folkstyle mixed in.
The Club program operates in a "FUN" atmosphere where the wrestlers are encouraged to try new things and experiment with varying techniques. Keep in mind that although this is a "fun" setting the coaching staff take the sport of wrestling very serious and as such all club wrestlers will be held to a high standard in all aspects of their lives. This program is a challenge both physically and mentally.
All Benicia residence, grades 3rd-12th, are welcome to join the club program. All Club members must have a USA Wrestling membership to join the team. If your child wants to give the sport a try we encourage them to come out. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.
We travel to several tournaments during the Spring where the kids can apply what they have learned on the mat.

Why learn Freestyle?
Most of the techniques in Freestyle wrestling transfer over to Folkstyle. There are a few difference that include throws, scoring and the ability to lock hands while on the ground. This is a really fun style where almost any and all techniques work well. If you have never wrestled before this is a perfect way to start. |
Why Learn Greco / Roman Style?
This style of the sport is more challenging in the fact that you can really only use upper body strength and are not allowed to attack the legs of your opponent. This style will increase you upper body strength and allow you to transition into other forms of wrestling with a good overall balance and body control. |
