Co-Head Coaches
Coach Aquino

YCoach Aquino started wrestling as an 11th grader at Vintage High School. While waiting for the South County bus to bring him from Napa to Vallejo, Coach Aquino got pulled onto the wrestling mats to “mess around”. Undeterred, he wrestled in his first tournament two days later, won it, and thought he was on his way to the Olympics. Little did he know! He fell in love with the sport and has been involved with it ever since.
In 1987, Coach Aquino finished first in the Monticello Empire League (MEL) and 3rd at the 1988 Northern California Community College Regional Tournament. Wrestling took Coach Aquino to college where he attended Napa Valley College, UC Davis, and San Francisco State University.
Coach Aquino started his coaching career by coaching his brothers at the high school level while attending college. He took an assistant coaching position at Oakland High School in 2002 and head coaching job in 2003 through 2008 at the same school. Oakland High won the Oakland Section during that tenure and qualified 28 wrestlers to the State Championships. Coach Aquino then moved on to be the co-head coach at Benicia Middle school reviving a program that had been non-exsistant for many years. The 2012 season will be the 3rd year Coach Aquino has been coaching in Benicia.
Always being small in stature, wrestling gave Coach Aquino an opportunity to compete on a truly level playing field where all that mattered was the time, talent, and effort he dedicated to the sport. He credits wrestling for his attendance and completion of college. Coach Aquino bounced from one school to the next seeking the best competition in the area to improve as a wrestler which
lead to him finishing his degree at San Francisco State University.

Coach Goodwin

Coach Goodwin started his wrestling career his freshman year at Oceana High School where he was a three time CIF qualifier placing 4th at the California state championships and a CCS Champion. After High school he attended San Francisco State University and was a three time All American in wrestling with more than 100 wins during his college career.

Coach Goodwin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Benicia wrestling programs along with a desire to help the youth in our community.
Coach Goodwin's favorite quote, “Wrestling has been a way of life with me day in and day out. I won't get too far away from it. I might walk through the wrestling room once a week. I could go every day if I wanted. But just walk through, make sure it's still there.”
The sport of wrestling is a tremendous builder of the values and characteristics which are needed to succeed in any walk of life. Much of what I have managed to achieve in life I owe directly to the years I spent in the wrestling room, as an athlete and a coach. Wrestling is a great educational tool.

Coach Smitty - CoachSmitty@BeniciaWrestling.org

Coach Smitty has been involved in organized sports from a very early age. Wrestling was not a sport that was available to participate in until his high school started a program at the beginning of his Junior year. He joined the team and wrestled in as many tournaments as he could, racking up many wins over a short period of time.
In the 2010-2011 school year, Coach Smitty came out to help with the instruction of the Benicia Middle School Wrestling program when his son, Trent, joined the team. He focused mostly on assisting the bigger wrestlers. As he continues to increase his knowledge in the sport of wrestling, he has assisted with growing the program. When his daughter, Ali, showed interest in the sport he assisted in organizing a middle school girls team in the Spring of 2012. He also helped get the elementary program started in the Fall of 2012. Coach Smitty helps as an assistant coach with all of the wrestling programs and designed and updates this website.
One of his proudest moments while helping the wrestlers from Benicia Middle School was when a first year wrestler, who he helped, claimed the 2011 California Middle School State Championship. Coach Smitty said, "The changes both physically and psycologically of the wrestlers is an amazing transition to see. Some of the kids come in the first day with very little confidence or physical fitness and as the year goes on they become fit and start to carry their heads high, knowing they can acomplish anything they put their mind to."
Coach Smitty still claims that having wrestled, even for a short time, increased his confidence and ability in overcoming other obstacles he has encountered throughout his lifetime.
